CD Reviews

Mostly, Vol. 1 tracks (plus a few gems from Vol. 2)

(3 out of 5 stars)

"The Commitments do wonderful covers of some great blues and soul tunes, mostly with the energy and depth of the original artists. The Commitments was originally a film about an Irish slum band. The music from the movie was released in two soundtracks (Vol. 1 and Vol. 2). This album complies the "best" of those CDs and throws in a few new songs. Most of the songs on this album come from Vol. 1, including the standard "Mustang Sally," the energetic "Try a Little Tenderness," and the almost-wistful "Dark End of the Street." Somehow, the weak "I Can't Stand the Rain" makes the cut at the expense of the excellent road trip song "Destination Anywhere" and some of the female-led songs. Some gems from Vol. 2 also appear on this compilation, including the wonderful "Hard to Handle" and the weirdly-titled but still great "Fa Fa Fa Fa Fa (Sad Song)." The new tracks are nowhere near the artistic quality of Vol. 1. In fact, I can't remember hearing any of these songs in the film. "Half a Man" and "Some Kind of Wonderful" are good tunes but the energy and spirit of the band fails to emerge from the music. You are better off getting both Vol. 1 and Vol. 2 but this successfully does justice to The Commitments."
THE BEST SOUL SOUND SINCE THE 60'S

"I HAVE BEEN LISTENING TO SOUL MUSIC SINCE THE 50'S. I HAVE ALL THE MAJOR SOUL ARTISTS BOX SETS. FROM HOOKER,BAKER,30 YRS OF R&B ELVIS,COOK,OTIS,FRANKLIN, ETC,ETC. THE COMMITMENTS CD IS THE FRESHESTS THAT I HAVE HEARD IN 30 YRS. HOW I MISSED THIS CD UNTIL NOW BLOWS MY MIND. JUST LIKE THE CD. MY FAVORITE IS MARIA DOYLE DOING I NEVER LOVED A MAN. WOW!. WHAT A SOUL BURNER. THE VOCALS ARE RIGHT THERE ALONG WITH THE HORNS. NOT ATTENTION GRABBING BUT SOUL CARRYING. TREAT HER RIGHT IS MY 2ND FAVORITE. ROY HEAD IS FROM MY AREA AND I USE TO LISTEN TO HIM IN DIFFERENT CLUBS. (BELIEVE IT OR NOT BUT HE USE TO DO SOME MEAN COUNTRY AND WESTERN). BUT ROBERT ARKINS VOCAL IS JUST FANTASTIC. ROBERT PUT MORE SOUL INTO THE SONG AND WHEN YOU MIX IN THE VOCALS IT MAKES YOU WANT TO JOIN A SOUL BAND. I KEPT PASSING OVER THE MARIA DOYLE, BYE BYE BABY SONG. I STARTED LISTENING CLOSER AND THIS IS NOW MY 3RD FAVORITE SONG ON THE CD. WITHOUT A DOUBT THE WHOLE CD IS WHAT SOUL IS ALL ABOUT. I WOULD PAY MONEY TO SEE THEM IN CONCERT. A GOOD IDEA WOULD BE TO PUT THEM ON DIRECT TV PAY PER VIEW. JUST LIKE THE GEORGE THOROUGHGOOD CONCERT. (ANYONE LISTENING)?."
