Synopsis

Album Description
A legend from the middle ages has it that those who went into the church on the eve of the feast day of Saint Bartholemew and danced through the night could be healed of their afflictions. The new album from Colcannon, Saint Bartholemews Feast, probably cant heal you, but it will bring relief to your ears and heart with Colcannons signature blend of new acoustic and traditional Celtic music. From blazing instrumentals to soaring airs and ballads, Colcannon plays in a style that is unique in the folk music world; a pub band meets chamber music aesthetic that is at once grounded and ethereal. The album moves seamlessly between ancient traditional songs and original modern compositions by members of the band, and is colored with a rich all-acoustic instrumental palette; Fiddle, flute and bodhran are met by bowed acoustic bass, mandocello and guitar, with occasional splashes of erhu (Chinese spike fiddle), accordion, and bamboo flute. Vocalist Mick Bolger sings in both Irish (Gaelic) and English with a passionate and earthy baritone. Producer Charles Sawtelle has brought out Colcannons strengths on this, their fourth album for Oxford Road records. From the infectious dance groove on Little Drummer to the chilling murder ballad Yellow Doll, Saint Bartholemews Feast is a feast indeed for old and new fans of Colcannon. Come to the dance!
