CD Reviews

Lovely album dug up from the vaults
J. R. P. Wigman | Netherlands | 09/20/2006
(4 out of 5 stars)

""Banjoland", according to the accompanying notes, was never released back then in 1967 and has slumbered in the vaults for all these years. Thankfully, this fine (but rather short) Clive Palmer album has been brought to light.

The title is quite apt: the cd features Clive on banjo and vocals, accompanied on some tracks by Wizz Jones and on one lovely track (Stories of Jesus) we find (oh indulgence!) a string arrangement. Unadorned, stark and largely instrumental, it is not hard to see why no record company chose to release it at the time, especially since the psychedelic revolution was gaining momentum. Added to the original album are a couple of great bonus tracks, especially the first one which finds Clive and Wizz on a country road ("heeee-haa!").

You wouldn't be reading this if you didn't know Clive Palmer's work. I can therefore skip a lot of explaining and just mention that this album, though far from being on a par with his best work with COB is a fine and characteristic album which I suspect will grow on me as time goes by.
