Synopsis

Claudia Acuna is a fresh vocal talent from Santiago, Chile. Blessed with an attractive voice, clean enunciation (despite relatively basic English), and a good sense of musical time. Acuna is not a scat singer nor particularly improvisatory, but she does have a way with songs that bears watching. The rangy repertoire here includes time-honored standards, songs sung in Acuna's native Spanish, contemporary delights like Stevie Wonder's "Visions," a lively reading of Gershwin's "My Man's Gone Now," and a bit of bop vocalese on "Long As You're Living." Acuna contributed the lion's share of arrangements and works and is accompanied largely by piano, bass, and drum and augmented on several tracks by horn soloists (including saxophonist David Sanchez on two tracks). Also included are two duets with veteran pianist Harry Whitaker. There's a buoyant and attractive seascape quality to several of the tracks, and for Ellington's indelible "Prelude to a Kiss," Acuna jacks up the tempo and swings. Typical for a debut artist, Acuna is all over the map, but it's a map that promises exciting future destinations. --Willard Jenkins

CD Reviews

Good stuff overall, she's got my vote
Frank Garon | Breinigsville, PA United States | 07/12/2003

"Ok, so English is not her first language. I still dig her style, and I think she makes up for the linguistic shortcomings in her spirit and purity of voice. One of the better albums I've bought this year, and one certainly worth buying. To be honest I wish she'd do a Spanish-only Jazz Cd. Can't understand half of what she's saying, but DAG NAB it sure sounds good!Claudia really does have a great voice, and I will be looking forward to new material from her."

"I HAVE JUST PURCHASED A CD AFTER HEARING CLAUDIA SING IN PERSON TODAY IN TEL AVIV'S MUSEUM. HER SPANISH SONGS ARE DEFINITELY HER FORTE- BUT THE REST IS STILL VERY PRO. SHE REMINDS ME OF CARMEN MC RAE- AND I BELIEVE SHE IS HEADED FORWARD- IMPROVING AS SHE GOES... KEEPING THE LATIN RHYTM AND DISPLAYING A WIDE TONAL RANGE SHE CONVEYS HER MESSAGE EVEN TO THOSE THAT DO NOT UNDERSTAND THE LYRICS.... WISH HER LUCK AND MANY HAPPY RECORDINGS"

"This is the BEST jazz CD I have ever heard. She is better than Stacey Kent and Tierney Sutton. Maybe I have tin-ears, but it is well worth it to be able to enjoy this CD so much. You must buy it if the samples sound good to you."
