CD Reviews

Awesome release of the Mozart Clarinet Concerto
Classic | Lexington, MA USA | 11/13/2004
(5 out of 5 stars)

"This recording features the legendary late clarinetist Harold Wright performing the following works: 3 pieces from Opus 83, by Max Bruch; Fairy Tales Opus 132, by Robert Schumann; Elegy for Clarinet and Piano, by Ferruccio Busoni; Contrasts by Bela Bartok; and the Clarinet Concerto K.622 by Mozart. The recording is worth buying for the Mozart alone; the slow movement has such depth it puts any other recording of this piece I have heard to shame. In a word, it's timeless.

All the works here are superlative; the only issue I can identify is the sound quality of the Busoni, which is not up to the same standards as the other selections. The compensation for this is the extreme ethereal beauty of the piece.

I highly recommend this recording.

I would only buy if you are a clarinetist

"The recording quality is not very good on this CD. The best recorded work is the Mozart Concerto. This recording is worthwhile to hear Wright play but the quality of the recordings is very uneven throughout the CD. Most are live and the microphones are miles away and there is too much ambient sound. It is a shame that the recordings are not of better quality it does not do Wright's playing justice. I purchased this CD as a clarinetist but cannot recommend it to a non clarinetist because there are so many high quality recordings of the Mozart Concerto where your money is better spent. Sabine Meyer comes to mind of a very well recorded and well played Mozart."
