CD Reviews

True Wu-Tang
Joshua R. Hooten | 03/06/2008
(5 out of 5 stars)

"On the album liner of Cilvarings' 1 is a disclaimer basically stating that guests appearing on the album do not necessarily agree with the political views stated by Cilvarings. This originally turned me away from purchasing this CD. I didn't want to be preached at by another uninformed musician about everything that is wrong with America, This and the fact that I was completely disappointed by the Wu Tangs 8-Diagrams debacle. I did a little research on Cilvarings and learned he is a Wu Tang affiliated MC from the Netherlands and of Moroccan decent, so I figured maybe he actually has something to say from a different perspective. I only hope that others can keep an open mind and give this up and coming killer bee a chance, you won't be disappointed.

Production on the album is handled by numerous talent's not to mention Cilvarings himself. The beats are classic Wu Tang, dark and raw. You can tell the RZA worked closely on this project as his influence is all over the album. Guest appearances from the original clan members abound, and lyrically Cilvarings holds his own outshining lesser known members. There is definitely a strong political message in most songs and whether you agree with it or not you have to respect his opinions. Cilvarings' passionate delivery and insightful lyrics are undeniable.

In classic Wu Tang style Cilvarings shines on collaborations kicking it off on the high energy RZA assisted "Wu-Tang Martial Expert". "Sheherezad My Beloved" is an amazing song about a significant other I respect anyone writing a song to thank those that have been most supportive of their career. "Death to America" is a very powerful message in spoken word while it may be controversial to some once again you have to respect the passion in which it is delivered. "In the Name of Allah" is a classic Wu Tang track and Masta Killa is impressive as always. The anger of this conscious emcee is apparent on "Jewels" a track providing commentary on the violence in Africa among other things.

I've been a diehard Wu Tang fan for years, I own basically anything related to the Wu from GFK to Killarmy, while there have been some impressive solo Wu releases as of late such as Ghostface to Masta Killa these artists have kept elements of the clan but have developed their own individual style. The Wu Tang Clan of "36 chambers" is no more but Cilvarings is the closest thing to the "Wu Tang" sound I have heard in a while. If you are a true Wu Tang fan like myself do not sleep on this release.
