Synopsis

With a scraggy, Dylanesque voice, a predilection for unadorned lyrics and circular melodies, and a wit that is as artless as it is earnest, Chuck Brodsky's class of countrified folk-rock seems based entirely upon its ability to inspire nostalgia in its listeners. The Last of the Old Time, Brodsky's fourth outing, includes two of his trademark baseball yarns ("Gone to Heaven" and "Bonehead Merkle"), two charmingly frank political complaints ("Boys in the Back Room" and "He Came to Our Town"), and a slew of lively, Dobro-tinged anecdotes depicting only the most appealing aspects of rural American culture. The album's standout is its first track, "Take It Out Back," a rollicking swamp-rock rant that is at once a quirky portrait of hickdom and a stab at consumer culture. The Last of the Old Time is an earful of good, old-fashioned baseball-and-apple-pie Americana. --Sally Weinbach

CD Reviews

Better than ever

"Chuck Brodsky may not be a name on every ones lips but his CDs should be in everyones collection and this set is a good place to start. The album contains a typical mix of laughs and more thought provoking songs. Its not always good to compare artists as appreciation of singers is very personal but, to me, Chuck shares some interests, baseball, and delivery with the late Steve Goodman."
A gentle way of delivering the truth

"Chuck combines a great voice and witty lyrics to bring attention to all sorts of social issues. His topics range from humble baseball mascots of the past to the arrogantly ignorant politicians of the present. He covers all of these topics without offending anyone. And that, is his true gift."
Incredible Story-Teller with a Great Voice

"Chuck Brodsky is a truly gifted singer, song-writer, with a lovely voice, marvelous sense of humor (Take it Out Back (and dump 'em in the river)), a wonderful, cynical and impressive social awareness and sensitivity (Boys in the Back Room), and an amazing spinner of fascinating, funny and sad baseball yarns (Ballad of Eddie Klep a white man in the Negro leagues who was also discriminated against, Bonehead Merkle, the guy who blew the 1908 Cubs agains the Giants penant race for the Giants). Best of all, sometimes he combines all of these skills and abilities and talents in a single song. His songs are funny, sad, moving, historically fascinating, and more. Not a wrong note or word on the whole album. One of his best."
