Synopsis

Even if you didn't know the plot of We Are Marshall, you could deduce from this CD that it's an inspirational movie set in the heartland and that it's about college sports. You'd be right. "Marshall vs. East Caroline" is a dead giveaway. The track starts off with a gentle piano theme, quickly augmented with a softly plucked guitar and strings; just after the minute mark, a fierce drum line comes in and shakes things up, though a slightly ominous undercurrent indicates that tears will have to be shed and boys will have to become men before victory can be declared. Fans of composer Christophe Beck from his days on Buffy the Vampire Slayer must be warned that his style on this soundtrack is a far cry from the one he adopted on the TV series--most of the cues here are fairly unassuming, except when Beck brings back the drum line ("Marshall vs. Xavier," "The Young Thundering Herd"). Note also that while the movie is set in the 1970s, this CD is devoted to the score and devoid of the expected classic-rock tunes. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

CD Reviews

"We Are Marshall" Music

"The music to the "We Are Marshall," movie is absoutley a masterpiece of music. The interesting thing is I did not realize how good "We Are Marshall" was while viewing the movie. I have viewed the movie twice. I knew the music was there, but was so involved with the story and dialogue I had not realized how great this muscial matsterpiece was, until I played the CD by itself. WOW. The music takes you through a range of emotions from being somber, sad, uplifting and giving a feeling of peacefulness. This may one of the most incredible composed works of music ever producded in modern times. Pieces of this fine music should definitely be played and become part of many traditonal Marshall University events. This is incredible music and I could see it winning many awards and becoming a piece played by many orchestras all over the world. Christopher Beck did an outstanding job of composing this sophiscated piece of music. The powerful music fits perfectlly with the movie and the story. That may be one reason the "We Are Marshall," movie is so powerful. The music seems subtle in the movie, but one needs to listen to the "We Are Marshall," music on it's own to appreciate how powerful and emotional this music is. WOW."
A great compliment to a great film

"This is probably the perfect score for "We Are Marshall." Beck manages to combine so many elements of musicianship into this score effortlessly. Primarily, this film is about loss, rebirth, and triumph over adversity, and Christophe Beck's original score makes you feel that all the way through. You can hear Beck's influences (I hear lots of John Barry, who did "Dances With Wolves" and James Horner, who did "Glory"), yet incorporates the essential elements of the football experience into the music (the full marching band drum line, with drum solo on Track 2 "Marshall vs. East Carolina" is a particularly good addition). Even through you don't want him to take you there, Beck makes you feel the sudden and tragic loss. The solo vocalist in on Track 6 "Our Boys' Plane" is haunting. I am also pleased to see that Beck has used guitar on parts of this soundtrack, as this is a period movie and the early 1970s were pretty big guitar years. The guitar however, does not overpower the score, unlike many I have heard before. Finally, the cello solo on Track 11 "Sons of Marshall," coupled with the piano is awesome. I just wish it would have lasted longer. Overall, an excellent original score."

"I love my CD soundtrack of the movie, "We Are Marshall". It is so beautiful and soothing to listen to. I listen to it while I'm fixing dinner or while I'm reading the paper. I also put it on when I'm drifting off to sleep. Now, I'm waiting on the DVD to come out."
