At 22, trumpeter Christian Scott plays beyond his years. He not only has chops to spare, and the Berklee College of Music education to go with them, but also an understated elegance you don?t often find in players this young. A New Orleans native, Scott also has an uncanny ability to juxtapose benchmark jazz styles, nearly all of which he no doubt absorbed through prolonged exposure to Miles Davis: fusion, funk, postbop, modal, smooth. On his Concord debut, Rewind That, a standout fellow Crescent City product, alto saxophone veteran Donald Harrison, is on hand to enliven several cuts, including a lovely, languorous arrangement of Davis's "So What" (from Kind of Blue). But whether feeding atmospheric effects with his purring notes or pushing against the groove to brassier effect, Scott is very much in the driver's seat with his assured band, including guitarist Matt Stevens, tenor saxophonist Walter Smith III and drummer Thomas Pridgen. He sometimes settles for decorative, Chuck Mangione-type phrases, but most of the time, the substance of his playing is right up there with the style. Nine of the 11 tracks are originals. --Lloyd Sachs

CD Reviews

Lyric trumpet with roiling percussion
rash67 | USA | 06/06/2006
(4 out of 5 stars)

"Whenever you compare a musician to Miles Davis, and I do, the question becomes "which Miles Davis?". Miles had many changes of style.

I would say Mr Scott reminds me most of the second quintet, with Wayne Shorter & Herbie Hancock "Footprints", or perhaps "In a Silent Way", (despite having an uptempo version of "So What"). The underlying percussion has that roiling, boiling constant motion quality of Tony Williams. Mr Scott's trumpet is lyric, breathy melodic. Often the rhythm secion is doubletiming or quadruple-timing the dreamy overdubed duet trumpet or trumpet and sax leads. His guitarist reminds me of Pat Metheney.

His original compositions show a maturity and understanding of the historical roots of Jazz far beyond his years. A music hard to pigeonhole with influences from many sources. Nearly all original songs are modal or minor key. It seems to have that dark, midnight, melodic, melancholy edge and a tone I associate with Miles Davis before '64, but instrumentation from later. A Fusion feel. Samples tell a lot.

Recommended new artist."

"Strong major label debut from this young musician. I think every cut on this CD is a winner. He plays with clarity and imagination on every cut. I recommend this CD to anyone who wants to keep their eye on an up and coming musician to watch in the future. I think his sound is creative and innovative. He is expanding the genre as well as creating his own unique style. This is a musician with a vision that will only continue to grow by leaps and bounds. After all originality isn't suppose to sound familiar!"
This music makes my day! - by an unsohpisticated reviewer

"When I heard the song Say It, playing on the radio, KNTU FM, I had to have this CD. It was because of the contrast between the horns and the guitar. Like the guitar was going to rip out, but then it just was so smooth and melding perfectly with the other instruments. The guitar sound on that song reminded me of work by John McLaughlin for some reason.

Of course, the CD is all about the trumpet. And wow. Christian Scott and the other musicians on this CD deserve all the acolades they get, and more.

I went right out and purchased the CD, and have been playing it over and over. I really like it."
