Pianist Christian Matjias performs a series of pieces for solo piano by composer Phillip Carout that eschews the classical modes one might have expected from this gifted keyboardist, opting instead for the sparseness and relative danger of ambient music. This is music that does have joy in it, that goes unexpected places, that can challenge listeners while at the same time allow them to reflect on other matters. In that it is that rarest of musics, music that can be discovered anew each time it is heard. The music brings to mind classical phrasing here and jazzy mode there.
