Nehring | Ostrander, OH USA | 07/11/2009 (4 out of 5 stars) "The India Navigation label rereleased many of its 70s and 80s recordings in CD format, and this one of the better ones, recorded in 1981. It features Cecil McBee on bass, John Hicks on piano, and Jack DeJohnette on drums. The music is more exploratory than on the previous CD, Spirit Sensitive, but still communicates beauty and wonder. This is music clearly in the spirit of John Coltrane, but it does not sound imitative.
Readers with more conservative tastes in jazz might want to start with Spirit Sensitive, then move on to explore The Outside Within. Both are wonderful CDs." |
