Synopsis

Amazon.com essential recording
While many of Charlie Parker's surviving live recordings consist of only the altoist's solos, this CD presents complete performances of Parker playing his core repertoire. The music comes from two Boston performances, the first from 1952, the second from 1954, and it provides a chance to hear Parker's different, and brilliant, takes on "Ornithology," "Cool Blues," and "Scrapple from the Apple." While the 1952 session includes the stellar support of Charles Mingus and Roy Haynes, the less-celebrated Boston musicians of the 1954 recordings sound just as inspired by Parker's presence. --Stuart Broomer

CD Reviews

Another good one from Uptown!
Blues Bro | Lakewood, Colorado USA | 08/13/2008
(5 out of 5 stars)

"The quality is excellent on this recording. Of course it was recorded live almost 60 years ago in a club, so you may hear occasionally some chat in the BACKGROUND, but that is totally normal. This is actually one of the best sounding live Bird CDs out there, so buy with confidence, dont expect rough sound quality, overall is very very good.

The liner notes are as extensive as they can be, a 35 page booklet!! Uptown is a small company and this wont be in print forever. If I were you, I'd snatch a copy today."
Bird's sound is bright and controled with the excellent crew

"I highly recomend this CD because of the classic sounds of Parker live. The club setting is ideal for the group and gives Parker more vip than the studio. The quality of the recording is OK because one can hear people talking in the background."
