CD Reviews

Charley Patton The Definitive
Stuart Jefferson | San Diego,Ca | 05/28/2008
(5 out of 5 stars)

"3 discs. Digitally remastered. Total time of the 3 discs is approximately 3 hours. Lets get one of the main questions out of the way first. How are the recordings? I am happy to report that the sound is very good, considering what there is to work with. The set put out by Revenant a few years ago is also good. For the money I would buy this set over the Revenant. Yes the Revenant set has some recordings allied somewhat with Patton and interviews but the other songs can be found elsewhere usually through Yazoo Records. The price is also very steep for the Revenant package. That makes this the one to buy! The box itself is stiff cardboard, the cardboard sleeves are made to look like the old Vocalion Records sleeves and the booklet is informative. The booklet describes Patton's life and how he came to record these sides. Nothing really new for the informed blues buyer but good for someone just coming to Patton. While there are a few alternate recordings and some that Patton may have played on,not here,as I said, these can be found elsewhere. For someone just starting a blues collection this should be one of your first purchases. After listening to these discs you will understand why."

"I am a long time blues fan but had never really focused on Charlie Patton. I heard this at a friend's house and it blew me away. Great recording quality. Amazing singing and playing. Definitely the real deal. If you are a fan of country blues this is an absolute must for your collection."
