"Apostolic Polyphony features pianist Matthew Shipp, multi-instrumentalist Charles Waters, and drummer Andrew Barker. This trio of leaders started working together in 2002 in New York City and their music very quickly began generating a lot of excitement. Moving seamlessly from full throttle free blowing to dirges of Messianic color and proportions, the music is the face of the next generation of post-modern jazz. The cd also features an exciting new composition by NYC electronic musician and composer, Shannon Fields, based on transformations of source material from the preceding seven tracks. Waters cites Olivier Messiaen as one of his greatest musical influences who he has tried to emulate in both aesthetic and spirit in his music. As Messiaen once wrote, I ask for a true music, that is to say, spiritual, a music which may be an act of faith; a music which may touch upon all subjects with ceasing go touch upon God; an original music, in short, whose language may open a few doors, take down some yet distant stars. With this mantra, the trio wades right in to the deep end in an act of faith that may indeed open a few doors and take down some distant stars."
