"Wo" Is Wonderful -- and Breathtaking!
Roseanne E. Freese | Arlington, VA | 04/02/2005
(5 out of 5 stars)

"Les Charbonniers d'Enfer is one of the premier celtic music groups of all Canada. This album will literally take your breath away. First, how do you classify it? Is it Celtic? Is it old French? Is it the throat-singing of First Nations of the great Canadian north? These five gentlemen will weave rounds, contrast melodies, and tap notes in amazingly complex combinations. Single voices will soothingly call the lead while the collective cadence will draw you out to dance.

Quebecois Celtic music has been around for centuries -- ever since the first fur trappers took to their canoes and made the vast woods and St. Lawrence their home four centuries ago. They are the patrimony of Beausoleil and other great American Cajun musicians. Les Charbonniers de l'Enfer, however, move at a more romantic and elegant pace then their southern restless, wildcat cousins, their use of traditional Quebecois foot tamping (more than a tap but not as heavy as a stomp) add a wonderful zing and dash that will have you coming back for more.

This album is marvelously arranged, with each tune laying the melody and footwork for the next. Every song on the album is delightful and each transition from poetic to reflective, reflective to subtle, subtle to expansive, and expansive to exuberant is seamless. Enjoy!"
