CD Reviews

An Incredible Duo
thetoneranger | the NY/NJ Area | 04/07/2003
(5 out of 5 stars)

"I genuinely feel that Arthur Cook's playing ranks highly among the many great and venerable cellists that I've heard, and that he is easily among the very best out there right now. Gorgeous tone, unreal vibrato, tasteful yet fresh interpretation; this guy's a hidden treasure that more people should hear. Deborah Gilwood is without question a formitable musician in her own right, with a beautiful touch on her instrument. Beyond these qualities that she displays on her own, she demonstrates a deep intuition and insight in the manner in which she plays together with other musicians she collaborates with. Combine these two musicians who are so wonderfully adept at working with each other, and you get performances of the highest caliber. Their personable nature and deep musicality reach out in their music and take hold of the audience, bringing them on an always rewarding and enjoyable musical journey. I strongly feel that this is a duo that the music world should turn their ears towards and listen to what their music has to say, and I hope that we'll get to hear many more recordings from this incredible pair of musicians.Bottom Line: BUY THIS CD!"
Precious music by true timless artists

"Bottom line Arthur Cook And Deborah Gilwood know there craft and make music like the best of them. I hope to hear more from the Cook/Gilwood team again. I've seen then in concert I was dragged by my mom a big fan and didn't know what to expect. What i got was magical. With this Cd you get more of the same and that Is a great thing. One thing you should know going into this Cd is it is dark. I think the darkness comes from the era the music was from. the Hitler time was a dark time itself so the music should be too and reflect the time. My favorite thing about this CD is that instead of aleady made up stories you get with the lyrics of today on this CD the music tells it own story. I get a story with notzies, Death and Hitler and loves lost. I'd rather imagine the music making the story any day to todays made up lyrics. I would venture to say this is one of the best clasical recordings I've ever heard and this is comming from a fan of mostly today's popular music. to all clasical fans this is a must and to you non clasical fans give it a try you might just find something new and exciting.

PS. If your in New York or Cape Cod and This great team is playing there perfect music they are a show not to be missed!!!"
