Lovely performance of the Serenade
Brian Clarke | London, UK | 01/26/2004
(4 out of 5 stars)

"The performance of the Serenade for strings is quite delightful. Recorded around 1959 when Rudolf Schwarz was Chief Conductor of the BBC Symphony, the sound is very good for its age and the playing truly homogenous even though the BBC Symphony would never have claimed to have the best string section in the country at that time. Schwarz gets the tempo of each movement exactly right, never forcing the pace, and he imbues the whole with just the right amount of colour and, where necessary, gravitas.
Needless to say, the Cello Concerto as played by Tortelier with the LSO under Andre Previn needs no further recommendation from me, but if you don't know the charming little G Minor Rondo for cello and small orchestra (sometimes heard with just piano accompanment) then you're in for a very pleasant little surprise!"
