CD Reviews

Good first exposure to Nigerian highlife music.

"After listening to this CD once or twice, you will find yourself humming several tunes on this excellent compiliation from the late Celestine Ukwu (died in a car accident in 1976). Although not familiar with this type of music, I enjoyed the relaxing, diverse performances. Lots of different instruments and styles represented. Some similarities with "island" music (Caribbean, even Fijian). But it's definitely it's own, unique, Nigerian style. Will buy more from this artist if it becomes available in CD format."

"A masterpiece.Celestine Ukwu, at a tender age, understood life. He was blessed, and definitely had the right message for mankind from GOD. May his young soul continue to rest with GOD. LISTEN TO THIS SOULFUL MUSIC AND ENJOY. Get a friend to interprete the language, if needed."
Onwunwa (temptation)

"Can anything good come from Africa? You bet. Celestine Ukwu was one of the greatest gifts God gave to Africa. Although he died very young and suddenly, many years ago, it is only now that people like me are beginning to recognize and appreciate this genius with rare talent. Although I do not speak Ibo, Celestine Ukwu's music, especially "onwunwa" (temptation), pounds my soul-as does the music of John Denver, Kishore Kumar (from India), Nana Mouskouri, the Immortal Jim Reeves, Barbara Streisand, and many other great talents.

Nigeria would have to be crazy not to name a street after Celestine Ukwu."
