CD Reviews

Her best album yet!

"Ever evolving into a truly inspired singer/songwriter, Catherine Durand has produced the best work of her career thus far with Diaporama. She has embraced her country folk roots, and let herself be inspired by the likes of Kasey Chambers, Aimee Mann, Sheryl Crow and Gillian Welch. Her cover of Chambers' I Still Pray is astounding, blending well with the whole album that sways with breezes of acoustic guitars and warm 70's keyboards. One listen of this album will have you smiling peacefully! Félicitations Catherine!"
Diaporama ...a masterpiece...and so worth the wait!!!

"At long last! The 3rd offering and three is a charm, from the incredible singer and songwriter Catherine Durand. I couldn't possibly bestow enough superlatives on this wonderful collection of song and music, but I shall try. As the prior editorial review suggests...possibly the greatest songwriter / performer of Quebec...well I second that opinion resoundingly, while expanding the title to perhaps even one of the greater in all of music. While Catherine's first 2 CD's clearly demonstrated her talent and unique songwriting...Diaporama takes her far beyond any previous excellence. Earlier works displayed a very sophisticated and novel pop / rock /folk and world music approach that is most enjoyable (and highly recommended listening), "Diaporama" broadens the musical scope of this tremendously talented artist. From the opening clock ticking strains of "Aujourd'hui" which hypnotically sets the stage for the treasures which follow and conclude with "Plus la meme ", a tender and sweet love song which closes the CD. In between are 9 exquisitely crafted songs covering just about the entire spectrum of relationships, love, life changing events, admiration, and even a post September 11 tribute song. Though I do have some favorites on this CD, it is almost unfair to single out because in so doing it excludes others...but if some favorites need be known , then try out "Souvenir de toi", "Meme si", "Je me rappelle", "Mon bateau ","Diaporama", "Nulle part", and the previously mentioned closing love song "Plus la meme " ... but really you should just listen from start to finish, then again, and again, and....and your love of this collection will only further grow. French speaking or not, it does not matter. The music, the moods, and the evocative phrasings by Catherine will reach your heart and soul. Musically, there is some scaling back from her 2 prior cd's, while at the same time less being more. The subtleties and musicianship are extraordinary...with each listening revealing something you did not quite hear before. I have listened to this CD at least once a day, every day since the May 3 release. I only waited until now to post this review for fear that I would not do it justice...and perhaps I still haven't. Take the leap and simply buy this CD...there are even 2 English language songs for non French Canadian ears...you will absolutely love this music and performer. It is about time that her world of followers grow to the level she truly deserves. Thank you Catherine for the four year work of love...Diaporama. I truly love this CD, and only hope that music fans everywhere discover it as well."
Wonderful french-canadian folk/pop

"Durand's "Diaporama" is easily her best album, and one of the best francophone folk-pop CDs I have ever heard. Although there are two songs in English, non-French speakers will be missing out on a lot as the lyrics are excellent. "Diaporama" is far more acoustic than her previous self-titled album, and focuses on introspective, thoughtful songs about life, love and relationships from a mature perspective."
