Gorgeous and moving
12/20/1999
(5 out of 5 stars)

"Miss Graves has truly produced a compelling work of art in the usually pedestrian field of Christmas music. She does not limit herself to the old standards we are all tired of hearing, she includes nativity-based songs from Africa and South America accompanied by the instruments indigenous to these cultures. Miss Graves repetoire is not limited to Western Opera alone, she displays an ability to transcend any conceivable barrier in her path. Be prepared to be amazed."

"When Denyce Graves sings "Ave Maria," it's like God sent an Angel down to sing it."
Frankly disappointing

"Ms. Graves may be touted as an up-and-coming young voice, but I was thoroughly disappointed. Her interpretation of what should be sweet and simple music is hugely melodramatic, and her vibrato is so thick I honestly can't tell if her voice is any good or not. If you like that sort of thing (and some folks do), then it is probably a five-star CD. Myself, I can't stand to listen to O Holy Night -- my favorite carol, and one that should sound pure, reverent, and angelic -- sung with a voice more appropriate to Wagner."
