CD Reviews

Great Garage band
05/21/2000
(4 out of 5 stars)

"At long last,a "best of" collection of the Castaways, probably America's best garage band of the 60's.(With the possible exception of the Kingsmen,of course.)Who doesn't remember that falsetto shriek at the beginning of "Liar,Liar"?I would have given this 5 stars, but unfortunately, they included some lame newer material on the c.d.They even had the temerity to do "Liar,Liar 2000"!Overall,though,it's a great listen to an underreated band of the 60's."
Battle of the Bands KINGS
11/02/2003
(5 out of 5 stars)

"For those that rated them as the best Garage bands and others who don't understand, I think you have to understand the local music scene of the 60's. Other than Gregory D and the Avantes (Greg Mayland later joined the Castaways) they were the defacto kings of the music scene. At their height no one could touch them. What only older rock & roll fans remember are the Battle of the Bands where bands would compete for local honors. And I for one can't remember anyone topping them at any one of the many times I saw them. Hearing some of these songs in Stereo is pretty cool for those of us who have only heard them on a dusty 45. Feel so Fine, Hit the Road Jack and other lesser (national) known songs were regular plays on "Weegie" WDGY and I think pretty big hits in the area. What is fun is to hear them again and in such good quality. I guess to sum it up - If my best of the Castaways CD had groves they would be worn out. Now all I need is a best of Gregory D and the Avantes to make my day!p.s. George Harrison (Former Beatle) re-released his All things must pass with 2000 remakes of a song or two and yes, it was a little disturbing to those of us who have memorized every iota of a song so I give the Castaways the same slack I give George. It's "interesting" but a little weird. p.p.s. The Bad Hair Day song is a riot I've never heard it before so I don't know if I missed it the first time around or if it's a new recording. But Country Western from the Garage man kings????"
