CD ReviewsA great 20's/30's sounding vocalist... Mr. Ragtime Jazz | 10/28/2000 (5 out of 5 stars) "Carla Normand(the regular "girl singer" with The Royal Society Jazz Orchestra) is a vocalist in the Ruth Etting, Mildred Bailey(of the 20's), Ramona Davies tradition. Her lightly swinging and very appealing voice is featured with a small jazz combo led by Don Neely(leader of The Royal Society Jazz Orchestra), which sounds similiar to Teddy Wilson's small group that backed Billie Holiday in the 30's, though Normand's singing sounds closer to the 20's. This set features a difinitive version of "A Sailboat in The Moonlights" and a very roamtic "Just You ,Just Me." All of the songs are jazz standards from the 20's and 30's and are classy as ever, a wonderful effort, it's great to see that someone is keeping this neglected style alive." Top-Notch CD from A Top-Notch Vocalist Edward J Vasicek | Kokomo, IN USA | 03/02/2001 (5 out of 5 stars) "Carla Normand is my favorite living female voclaist. She has a variety of styles, but perhaps has a touch of Ruth Etting's style and a touch of Dinah Shore's. The selection of songs in this CD is ideal for her voice, especially "Time on My Hands," "Willow Weep for Me," and "A Sailboat in the Moonlight." The New Deal Jazz band, led by her husband (Don Neely, leader of the Royal Society Jazz Orchestra) is just right, especially with Cornetist Bob Schultz livening things up. I love this CD and hope she will release another solo CD. Incidentally, her versatile voice can also be heard on recordings from the Royal Society Jazz Orchestra. Two thumbs up!"
