CD Reviews

Boas musicas, podia ser melhor/ Not bad, but could be better

"Please scroll down for an English translation of this review. English version, translated by the reviewer:This is an excellent collection for people who like a few of Capital's songs but can't be bothered to get the complete discography. Of the fourteen tracks, seven are from their self-titled debut. The remaining tracks come from their following albums "Independencia" (two tracks), "Voce nao precisa entender"(One track, which is one too many, as this recording is a throwaway), and "Todos os Lados" (two tracks, including "Ficcao Cientifica", a song composed by Renato Russo, the late lead singer (and great songwriter/lyricist) of the band Legiao Urbana. Renato and his band never recorded this song, so the Capital Inicial recording is the definitive (actually, the only) version of it, which is unfortunate, as the interpretation is energetic but unremarkable). The remaining tracks come from the various records after this, including the LP "Eletricidade". I do not find anything remarkable about these songs, but they do help to remind me why I stopped buying the band's records around the time this album came out.Although Not bad, this collection is by no means the ultimate Capital Inicial collection. A few of the more listenable tracks from their second album "Indepencia" were omitted in favor of the (inferior, in my opinion) tracks from their later albums. As I mentioned, however, most of the tracks of the collection are from the band's first phase and I am more fond of the good songs that were included than the ones that were omitted. That's why I think this CD is worth it. I should also add that it had been six years since I last heard a Capital Inicial song, so I like the CD even more. While distance may make the heart grow fonder, I still think the band's guitarist, Loro Jones couldn't play decent guitar if his life depended on it. The guy's barely competent, at best, but fits well within the band's sound which, not coincidentally, is not very guitar heavy anyway."
