CD Reviews

The Best Old-Time Band In The (Known) Universe!
Frank J. Dalton | Embreeville, PA USA | 04/27/2000
(5 out of 5 stars)

"These guys, many of whom are gone now, were the hard-drivingest old-time string band ever to record. This is a classic recording, and should be in every Old-Time Music fan's collection. From the opening bow-strokes of "Fortune" to the last note of "Pretty Little Girl" this CD kicks ass! If you don't have it, you haven't heard the best that the Blue Ridge has to offer. Does it sound like I like the Camp Creek Boys? Well, duh..."
Essential!
Megan Romer | Ithaca, NY | 12/04/2005
(5 out of 5 stars)

"This album is an essential addition to anyone who likes old-time music, or fiddle music in general.

Every single song on this album has made it into the standard old-time fiddle repertoire, so if you want to be able to sit in on an old-time jam session (or just listen to one and be familiar with the tunes), you've got a great primer right here. The musicianship is top-notch, these guys are deservedly considered legends.

Please keep in mind that old-time music and bluegrass are not the same thing; old-time is the predecessor to bluegrass. Old-time music is dance music, made for square and round dancing, as well as flat-foot clogging. All instruments play together at the same time, the fiddle holding the lead. Bluegrass music is for performances, not for dancing. Musicians take "breaks", where everyone else in the band pulls back and one instrument at a time (usually fiddle, banjo, mandolin and guitar) take the lead. Old-time is more about rhythm, bluegrass is more about hot licks. The Camp Creek Boys are old-time at its finest."

"This is one of the best old time bands ever. You cannot help but start dancing. If you don't have this album it is a shame."
