CD Reviews

The Byrd Finally Flies Solo
Terry Johnson | Kingsport, TN USA | 08/28/2002
(5 out of 5 stars)

"Byrd Burton has long been recognized as one of the most talented and tasteful guitarists in the business. Why he took so long to make this, his first solo record, is a mystery. Byrd, the Grammy-winning guitarist/producer on the early Amazing Rhythm Aces records, has a resume longer than my guitar cord: movie soundtracks, hit records, and touring with some of the biggest names in both the country and pop fields."Byrd Braynz" features some excellent instrumental covers of "The End Is Not In Sight" and "Third Rate Romance" from his Aces days, but he really shines on his original tunes like "Byrd Braynz" and "Soul Candy", an original R&B tune which showcases the tone and taste only Byrd can produce. He must be using God's Own Amp. As usual, his style and touch are impeccable, particularly his execution of two and three part lead lines in the first cut.Let's see...taste, tone, liner notes by Sam Phillips, Byrd's early mentor, and support from some of Nashville's finest studio players. This CD belongs in every guitar enthusiast's collection."
A guitarist's guitar album
Bill E. Payne | Roanoke, Va. | 01/11/2004
(5 out of 5 stars)

"If anybody asks what I think, I'd tell 'em that, if they buy another CD before they buy this one, they're not cleared as filed (one match short of a cookout). Talk about an album that grows on you! Byrd is a master at giving you the same feeling you got when you heard the original great cover songs, and creating the same feeling in his original tunes by making new melodies sound familiar and comfortable. The kind of stuff you play a lot. And the CD will always be there for you. I've had a difficult time picking favorites from this album. They've all become favorites, and I confess to more than a few occasions when I hit the "repeat" button on the CD player and let this collection ride. The title tune and "Cleared As Filed" are originals in the Byrd style that make you want to hear more. "Black Dogg Rag" and "Soul Candy" are departures that herald the versatility of this unsung guitar hero. Listen to "Crying", and tell me you don't hear Roy Orbison punching through and singing along. He'd be proud. I'm happy to know that the end is not in sight."

"If you like guitar music this is the one for you. Byrd Burton is a great player and plays some of the "classics" on this album. It is a must have for any one who just wants to relax and listen to great music."
