CD Reviews

The REAL Buster Poindexter
C. Koch | Philadelphia, PA, USA | 06/25/2005
(4 out of 5 stars)

"In 1984-85, after commercial failures with the New York Dolls and later as a solo artist, critically-acclaimed rocker David Johansen finally found his true voice -- in of all things, big-band jump R&B covers! Re-emerging as Buster Poindexter, his shows at Noo Yawk clubs (Tramps, The Bottom Line) were loose, raucous, hambone fun.

The late 80s brought two overly slick major-label albums and 15 minutes of TV talk-show fame with the now-dreaded "Hot Hot Hot." Fortunately, BUSTER'S HAPPY HOUR (1994) takes us back to the bars, where this music belongs. Guitarist Brian Koonin's impressively dry, straightforward production showcases such legendary live Busterworks as Lucky Millinder's "Big Fat Mamas Are Back in Style" and "The Worst Beer I Ever Had," a hilarious Johansen original.

This is a fun, generous CD (17 songs!) which provides the missing link between the Buster era and Johansen's fine acoustic roots-n-blues work with the Harry Smiths (2000-02) and the Dolls "reunion" of 2004-05."
Swing This Baby!!!!

"Songs about alchohol, big fat mamas. Verrrry Dirrrty! A lot of fun!! Jump blues of Louis Prima, Cab Calloway and Louis Jordan at their best. Stand-up bass player is still Tony Garnier (ex. Brian Setzer Orchestra, Robert Gordon, Tom Waits, Bob Dylan,...). Soozie Tyrell (ex. Bruce Springsteen)sings duet on Saturday Night Fish Fry and of course violin, drummer Tony Machine (ex. New York Dolls, David Johansen)are still in a band too. Must buy for all swingers and rock 'n' roll fans."
Oh, Demon Alcohol! Sad Memories I Can't Recall!
Kirk McKenna Jr. | Medina, Ohio United States | 02/21/2006

"Got this CD by accident and had absolutely no desire to listen to it. When I was bored one evening, I put this CD on and was absolutely surprised and blown away. Here is a CD filled with drinking songs, and is so fun without turning into total cheese. This CD was a favorite for a year and stayed in the player. My favorite song is Alcohol for it's endearing lyrics and sing-along quality. Don't miss this awesome CD."
