CD Reviews

Chant and tanbour evokes ancient Turkey.

"Burhan Ocal is one of the most respected Turkish musicians out there. He plays percussion, the stringed instruments, and he sings beatifully. In this album he surveys the ancient religious music of Turkey accompanying his voice with the tanbur. It is evocative and well recorded. Very peaceful and spiritual."

"I am a great fan of Burhan Ocal.He is the greatest musician or artist alive from Turkey ..not in turkey because he travels the world extensively and lives in Switzerland..
With this album of him , Ocal tried something completely different.Tanbur and his voice..All the cd is based on these two elements..In this album , Ocal , with his extensive knowledge of Ottoman classical music , has tried to interpret some very monumental pieces of classical Ottoman music..and the result is again wonderful and mind boggling!!!..Ocal never fails at any of his works..He never fails to get his fans in astonishment with his every new release..He has an unique style of tanbur playing..he is peerless..And he uses his voice so masterly in his chants...It is utterly difficult to interpret any of those pieces in original form. But again this is Burhan Ocal ;he is a master musician..
This cd is recorded in France and the recording quality is exceptionally good which we definitely need for such an instrument;TANBUR....Tanbur is almost an extinct instrument..First of all it is played by so few people and playing it in the right form is not so easy..The sound of the tanbur is completely melancholic and breathtaking...
Ocal in his album takes us back Byzantium times,to Ottoman courts and both to the new istanbul and the predecessor Constantinople.
This album is a masterpiece ..It is a must...."
Excellent,excellent,excellent...
