CD Reviews

Upbeat country with a slight touch of bluegrass

"Cathy, Charlene and Cindy hail from Jacksonville, Florida. They released this stunning debut in 1989, had minor country hits with singles from the album then disappeared back into the obscurity from whence they came. It is so sad because this album is one of my favorites and I wanted to hear much more music from these exciting ladies. The music is generally up-tempo and includes a brilliant selection of songs beginning with the feisty Every time you go outside I hope it rains. The finest Nashville musicians of the day were employed, including Mark O'Connor on fiddle. Some of the songs are covers but most are relatively unknown. Reba McEntire recorded I don't want to mention any names (a great woman-to-woman song) for her album Last one to know. The best-known song (at least in America) is probably Open arms, a song written and recorded by the rock group, Journey. Journey never made the top forty in the UK although they had two minor hits. Open arms was not one of them so even this song may be unfamiliar to most Brits. Of the other songs, Cold day in my heart is a Larry Gatlin song while Harlan Howard wrote What do lonely people do and Bob McDill co-wrote Old flame new fire, a lovely ballad that provides a nice contrast with the faster songs that make up most of the album. These and some of the other songs may also be covers but I've not heard any other versions. Hank Williams Junior recorded a song titled Old flame new fire for his Family tradition album but it is not the same song as the one on this album. The Burch sisters made just one album but there are many country singers who have made twenty or more albums and never recorded anything as good as this."

"these 3 sisters produced a classy cd about 15 years ago and then disappeared from the national country scene. Many fine cuts with beautiful harmonies and top tier musicians. A superior addition to any country collection"
