CD Reviews

Nice Selection
Benjah | Chicago | 08/07/2000
(4 out of 5 stars)

"This is a nice two disc set focusing on DJ versions and their dub versions from King Tubby. This is quality middle period work for him and all the tracks are good. There are some historical gems here from the feud between Prince Jazzbo and I Roy and to top it off ALMOST ALL THE DJ VERSIONS HAVE AN INCLUDED DUB VERSION. For those of us who are DJs, that's excellent. Once you have bought some of the albums like "Dub Gone Crazy" but this."
Top notch

(4 out of 5 stars)

"This 2 disc set showcases the talents of everyone involved- king Tubby, the master dub engineer; the Aggrovators, Bunny Lee's group of top quality studio musicians, who lay down their usual tight grooves; and the vocalists, in this case the incomperable I-Roy or Prince Jazzbo. As is commonplace with King Tubby projects, the original tracks are matched with comperable dub mixes, which allows the listener to get a feel for Tubby's brilliance on the mixing board. He had a way about him that I have been trying for a long time now to get even remotely close to matching. A King Tubby mix is instantly recognizable in the same way a "Scratch" Perry mix is. It is a testament to the man's great skills. These cd's are gold, and a joy to listen to. Alas, the recording quality at times is less than great, thus knocking my rating down to 4 stars. Many times on Jamaican recordings there are minor recording flaws that add to the overall effect, but on a track or 2 here, its more of a hindrance than an embellishment.Still, these tracks come very highly recommended- an excellent primer to Tubby's mid 70's output."
