CD Reviews

Texas Blues at its best!
08/06/1999
(5 out of 5 stars)

"For years Bugs Henderson has been thrilling crowds in Texas and the rest of the country with his brand of "American Music," a blend of blues influenced by rock, country, and a little jazz. Perhaps this is why the music merchants have such fits trying to place Bugs in a niche where he just will never fit. "Years in the Jungle" is another in the series of ass kickin' albums that began with "At Last" back in the late 70's and has its most recent incarnation in "Henderson and Jones." The album begins with "Anthem for the Blues," which is exactly what it is, an excellent example of the Henderson blues style. This album also features the ballad, "Lost in Austin," an observance of times past and present for this Texas troubador. This is a must hear song, featured in most concert appearances at the crowd's request. Henderson also does some excellent covers of "Sweet Marie" and "Summertime Blues" that are worth hearing. "Honey Mama" and "Blues in Reverse" feature that axe style that is known to blues fans as uniquely Henderson. "Video S.O.B." is Bugs' commentary on the modern music scene. The album closes with "Cowboy", an almost spiritual song of lament for a bygone era.If you enjoy house rockin', ass kickin', foot stompin', honky tonkin' blues at its best, then this is a "must buy" album! Believe me, you won't regret it."
