Brandywine singers quite intoxicating
John J. Maloney | Northern Rivers N.S.W | 09/14/2005
(3 out of 5 stars)

"the brandywine singers were winners of the top college folk group of the year in the USA in 1964 approx. they were previously known as the tradewinds . they performed great traditional songs in a way like the highwaymen , tarriers, kingston trio, journeymen, chad mitchell trio..etc etc.

they scored two hits 1963's summers come and gone witch made #41 in pitsburgh and in 1964 they had a smash hit in Australia with two little boys an old song rom the days of cylander recording's when it had been recorded by amoungst others the Denver nightingale the great Billy Murray ..in 1969 it was #1 in Australia and England being the last #1 hit of the 60's and the 1st #1 hit of the 70's in the famous rolf harris version.

it was also recorded by rusty drapper. the brandywine singers version is on this fine c.d and is in a rollicking tradittional folk style. sadly the original master tapes are lost for this albulm so it was transfered from other sources but still the sound is quite good the original albulm cover is reproduced beautifully.the other hit summers come and gone is also included. other tracks are saturdays child, two ten six eighteen (also recorded by jimmie rodgers), Boom-a-langa, devils waiting on bald mountain, mandy (not the barry manilow classic !), heres to the girls (a song recorded by the kingston trio as raspberries , strawberries)Quit kicking my dog around , the brandy stream, dry water, ya me voy. this is a lost classic of the folk Era a must for all lovers of folk/ 60's pop hits , and beautifully sung tunes.

Some of the best folk harmonies...
Richard E. "Nick" Noble | Southborough, MA USA | 04/30/2003
(5 out of 5 stars)

"Harmony in folk music is pretty basic, usually. Still, the very best groups can make it something special, in a variety of ways. The New Christy Minstrels had their fuller harmonies, while the Limeliters' arrangements made three guys sound like thirty. The Highwaymen had their soaring harmonies, playing four or five different voices off each other. Then we have The Brandywine Singers.Perhaps only the long-defunct Journeymen can rival the Brandywines for sweetness of harmony. It is such a special sound. "Two Little Boys" and "Two-Ten, Six-Eighteen" best exemplify the Brandywine sound. An old, loong-time favorite of mine is "Mandy", and "Raspberries, Strawberries" takes an old French Canadian tune and works harmonious magic with it. You don't hear about these guys much anymore (although in various permutations they've always been around) but they were (and are) something special. Give it a listen: you'll see what I mean."
