CD Reviews

Budget, Brilliant Brahms
Bradley M. Naylor | New Haven, CT USA | 07/04/2008
(5 out of 5 stars)

"After listening to other ensembles' performances of these works, I happened upon this box set in my university's music library. I find the interpretations spellbinding in their depth and variety.

The quartets - from the Liebeslieder waltzes to the op. 31 love songs - are performed by a solo quartet and are brilliant. The music for men's and women's chorus have richness and depth.

The jewels of this 7-CD set are the larger-scale works of op. 29, 74, 109, and 110. Nicol controls the Chamber Choir of Europe's phrasing and achieves impossibly long lines that push and pull, tense and relax as Brahms, a devout student of Renaissance polyphony, would have wanted. The choral sound is warm, but vibrato does not distort or confuse Brahms's highly expressive and chromatic harmonic language.

Only drawback is that the texts of the pieces in the liner notes are only in German, despite the bilingual program notes. A small blemish on an otherwise stunning effort. For seven and a half hours of Brahms, this deal is worth at least twice the price."
