CD Reviews

Candy Coated Boredoms
vyper | Minneapolis | 12/31/2004
(2 out of 5 stars)

"This cd is also known as "Super Roots",it is in fact, the first of the series by Boredoms.Super Roots are basically EP's(not full albums)where Boredoms get even goofier than usual and just mess around and experiment. The early volumes are just nutty oddball screwing around and having fun,and not playing very seriously, but the later volumes are more structured and "worth it".

I broke up the songs into proper tracks(I don't know why the last few were indexed as one track),several of them are very short.

Track 1 combines kissing noises,a staccato guitar "riff"and primitive trumpet warbling.

Track 2,a reggae style bassline, cool distorted riff, and silly cartoon vocal blabbering.

Track 3,a repeated guitar riff, pummeling drums, reminds one of a comical jungle chase scene

Track 4,all manner of junk percussion,Eye screaming usual nonsense, breaking into zither and bongo drums and chanting

Track 5,is a familiar melody(you've played it on piano as a kid)played on guitar, and what sounds like Eye jumping around screaming and banging on a pot

Track 6,most of the band chugging along yelling about"Machines!"and then Eye has a scream off with Yoshimi(love those ear piercing screams!)

Track 7,childish trumpet, squeak toys, mouth trumpets, erupts into thundering drum march with blaring trumpets

Track 8,garbled,underwater sounding mumbling and tin can percussion, break into Eye mumbling about something, and screaming and toy guitar dueling in each speaker, ending with sounds of a hand vac

Track 9,clanging,chiming bottles,Eye bleating in the background,co-vocalist Yoshikawa vocalizing like some shaman in a ceremony

Track 10,a more typical Bore track,a good hardcore riff, more punchy junk percussion, distorted vocals, the usual madness

Track 11,it ends with handclaps and footstomps and highpitched noises(balloon?)and chanting"Super Roots!"

You should know this is completely silly, not real"music",it's pretty much like letting Boredoms loose in a toy store and recording it.It's not important,it might even be stupid, and like alot of Boredoms cd's,probably a good thing to enrage your "serious"musician friends."
