CD Reviews

For fans of the Woodstock sound
07/12/2000
(4 out of 5 stars)

"For fans of the Woodstock sound and , particularly, fans of The Band this one is a must if for no other reason than the participation of Richard Manuel and Garth Hudson. That bonus aside, this is music that clearly stands on its own and projects the magical musicality of the time and place in which it was born. There are several other musicians of note making wonderful contributions to this effort including David Sanborn, John Simon ( the sixth member of The Band ) and the venerable Vassar Clements. This is a very solid blend of several influences including bluegrass, jazz and country rock, all melded and performed admirably. In addition, it's a wonderful piece of musical history that will be a great addition to any collection."
An Unknown Gem

(5 out of 5 stars)

"You will not visit friends (even '60's types) and find the original vinyl LP. You will never even stumble across this wonderful reissue in its present CD form. For that reason, I give them out as gifts (lead-time required). Forget the high-profile accompaniment (Manuel, Hudson, Sanborn, Clements); forget the Van Morrison connection. This needs no name-dropping. Dave Gershen, at the age of 25, and his brother Jon (just 22) were anonymous giants on the land. Don't drive your car (or, for that matter, attempt much else) when you listen to "Marble Eyes" --- you can't. Don't try to figure out why "Don't know Where I'm Going" was not a #1 single --- you can't. Don't bother to wonder why this album is so obscure --- just be glad you found it. And then be sad that the completed 2nd album has never been released.November 8, 2001 - The 2nd album IS on its way."
