Synopsis

Album Description

One of cuba?s most cherished cultural icons, singer and pianist Bola de Nieve lived from 1911 to 1971. A revolutionary interpreter of mambo and folk classics of Cuba, Bola funneled these sounds into a sophisticated expression that distilled their deep soulfulness, transmitting this essence to audiences worldwide. Playing concerts throughout the Americas, the Soviet Union, and elsewhere, Bola was regarded by many as a peer of Louis Armstrong and Nat King Cole. In recent years an award winning Spanish documentary was made of Bola?s life ("Bola de Nieve" 2003) and the award winning 1998 Cuban film "La Vida Es Silbar" (Life is to Whistle) from famed director Fernando Pérez featured a soundtrack composed entirely of Bola?s music. This classic session from Cuba?s famed Sonotone label captures Bola at the height of his powers in late 1950?s Havana.

"Nice series this is - I have a few of the other volumes and they're all unformly good. This one features the great Bola de Nieve and his unique brand of Afro-Cuban sentiment. The remastering here beats the high priced import release - nice to see this out in the States. Bravo to the Musica Original De Cuba series. Well done - very nice to hear Bola and his piano in this setting."
