Synopsis

Album Description
Bock & Blu, a Brookfield, Connecticut based band, is proud to announce the release of their first CD of original music on the newly formed Hybrid Records. Mixing contemporary jazz, rock, folk and pop stylings into a unique blend, I Hide My Face Like This... is a culmination of two years of production work involving 21 musicians. The album celebrates 19 years of songwriting collaboration between Gary Blu and Kenny Schiff. This inventive and listenable debut is highlighted by Barbara Bock's inspiring vocals and Blu?s artful arrangements. From the urban groove of Johnson City, to the Steely Dan-tinged Manhattan Beach, to the melodious and introspective Child of Fear, I Hide My Face Like This... covers a lot of musical territory. This debut project gives Gary Blu the opportunity to show off many of the skills he's been honing over the last 10 years as band leader, woodwind specialist, composer and arranger. In addition to work with his own regular performing ensemble, Blu has developed a close workingrelationship with Steely Dan?s Donald Fagen and Walter Becker. For the past five years he has worked along side them as arranger and copyist?his work featured on recent Steely Dan tours. In addition to the writing, arranging and production credits, ?I Hide My Face like This...? features Blu's soprano, alto, tenor and baritone saxophones, seamlessly integrated with the formidable brass section of Tony Kadleck (trumpet & flugelhorn) and Rick Trager (trombone). His stirring flute playing can be heard on Word by Word and his gorgeous bass flute can be heard on the disc's closing tone poem Night Song. Co-leader and lead vocalist Barbara Bock is a singer of great depth and range. Her rich and vibrant soprano details great emotion and technique throughout the 10 song set. Whether exploring the back streets of Beacon Hill in My Open Window, or examining the loneliness of childhood in Child of Fear, Barbara captivates the listeners with her heartfelt renderings of these thoughtful songs. Bock & Blu, a husband and wife team, have been playing music together since 1982. Their new album brings together an all-star supporting cast including renowned session players like Drew Zingg (Steely Dan, David Sanborn), Mark Shulman (Suzanne Vega, The Story), Clint de Ganon (Michael Franks, Bob James), Shawn Pelton (Saturday Night Live, Shawn Colvin), Dave Anderson (Warren Hill), Gary Sieger(Ben E. King), and Paul Mariconda (Mercer Ellington, The Cosby Show).
