What Amos shares with many of his influences is not only an ear for tight arranging but also economy of songcraft. His words sing even when spoken, conjuring rich imagery unencumbered by nonessential verbiage. Nowhere is this more obvious than on "Mr. Beford's Barn." Amos' ability to paint a moving narrative out of a simple story (based on an actual event), then go that next step and subtly transform it into metaphoric parable illustrates succinctly his arsenal of gifts. But what finally stands out most of all is Amos' melodies. After a listen or two, just try to get these tunes out of your head.
