Synopsis

It probably didn't take Bleu brainchild James McAuley III too much effort to entice reclusive Jellyfish frontman Andy Sturmer out of hiding to co-write and sing backup on "Could Be Worse," so potent are the hooks and cascading harmonies on his second full-length album. With Semisonic's Dan Wilson joining the Boston rocker on "Something's Gotta Give," Redhead is an all around power-pop treat with enthusiastic nods to AM radio mainstays like Badfinger and Supertramp, and warm, playful songs like "I Won't Go Hollywood" and "Could Be Worse." "Something Else," which also appears on the Spider Man soundtrack, is an obvious high point, but so is the surging ballad "We'll Do It All Again" and the hidden track "Dance Dance Baby Doll Dance." --Aidin Vaziri

CD Reviews

Bleu=Nearly Perfect Power Pop
Taleatia Vincent-Clark | 10/31/2003
(5 out of 5 stars)

"This record is just catchy-as-hell, the perfect combination of pop and rock, with plently of fuzzed-out guitars and gorgeous melodies. The guitar riffs are on the heavy side, but are balanced out by great vocals and harmonies. This record is just infectious. I think really anyone would like this, but it's especially a must for anyone who likes Fountains of Wayne, Semisonic, Nada Surf, or any other bands of their ilk. This record also takes the risk of adding the occaisional hair-metal harmonized lead guitar part (as they do on "Could Be Worse"), but it totally works. Really, just buy this record, this guy's got a great voice and superior songwriting skills and the result basically just rules."
ATTENTION PLEASE........FINALLY SOME TALENT

"Thank you Bleu, finally some great music with talent, variety and intelligence......about .......time as Stella McCartney said. As a jaded 40-something who experienced some phenomenal monumental musical creativity in the 80s-90s, but suffered from VH1 ennui after 2000, Bleu's Redhead was a much needed zephyr of muse that prevented me from hitching my wagon to "the oldies station". Bleu's fusion of 70's keyboards, 80's orchestrations, 90's guitar riffs and 00's archetypal styling, rejuvenated my ears. Not since XTC's Skylarking and Todd Rundgren's Liars have I been so riveted to an album. Don't just stand there, BUY THIS ALBUM your brain needs some real music...."

"Any fan of power pop needs to purchase this cd. Bleu is the Cheap Trick/Knack of the new millenium. Every song on this thing is great. I got it used on here for about $1.75...total bargain! I haven't stopped listening to it since."
