"This is a wonderful album, but I can't figure out why.The music is a combination of lyrics like John Hiatt, rhythms like Ry Cooder (the early stuff) and funky musicianship. It starts with a demented love song (the title cut), rolls out a fabulous gospel-inspired history lesson (Ol Man River), and then just wanders all over the place. There are themes here, but they don't get in the way: oddly named women (Savannah MacBeth, Tugboat Ann who probably is also known as Good Gal Gravyboat), obsolete means of transportion (river flatboats, railroad trains), and southern waterways. This is a great CD for rolling through the kudzu."
