Billie shines in mostly live recordings 1952-1959

"most critics dont like this later period as much as her commodore sides--- early 1940's--- or later Columbia recordings---late 30's early 40's------ which i agree are her best but these are her best also(you could call it her early to mid verve period --- many tracks are live with superb sound and the grewatest musicians of the era backing billie up---------you must own this ---- the ben webster (tenor) solos are as good as anything he ever played --- cant add to that --- buy this and its cheap too -- love you billie , very much"

"BILLIE HOLIDAY: SONGS OF LOST LOVE is typical of VERVE's "Essential" series in that it's typically superb.

In these sixteen crystal clear full-range hi-fi and stereo recordings Lady Day gives all that's left within her, and by so doing caps a legendary career in superstar fashion. Musicians accompanying Miss Holiday include (in no particular order): Oscar Peterson, Benny Carter, Harry 'Sweets' Edison, Ben Webster, Chico Hamilton, Barney Kessel, Tony Scott, Jimmy Rowles, Charlie Shavers, Willie Smith, Red Mitchell, Milt Hinton, Billy Taylor, Kenny Burrell and Cozy Cole.

Eight pages of liner notes provide session data, a Billie essay and brief label history.

Highlights? Just choose a song at random, cuz they're all GREAT!

Highest possible reco.

Another VERVE "Essential":

ELLA FITZGERALD: THE GREAT SONGS features another thrillng singer. In this set Ella croons, scats, glides and swings her way through such pop and jazz standards as "Oh, Lady Be Good." "A-Tisket, A-Tasket," "Summertime," "Pick Yourself Up" and a dozen others.
