Synopsis

Product Description
Only in America could a comic of Hungarian-Jewish descent named William Szathmary change his name to Bill Dana and become famous portraying a bumbling Mexican! A little too bumbling for the likes of some, and Dana renounced his Jose Jimenez character in the early '70s (and won an award in 1997 from the National Hispanic Media Coalition). So, we figured it was safe to put out Dana s 1960 recording debut, which took its title from the line his character used to introduce himself on The Steve Allen Show, and went to #15 on the charts! Indeed, half of this album consists of clips from The Steve Allen Show that first brought Jose Jimenez into American households. A comic landmark, a Collectors Choice Music exclusive!

CD Reviews

My name . . . William Szathmary
Annie Van Auken | Planet Earth | 04/08/2010
(5 out of 5 stars)

"This COLLECTOR'S CHOICE compact disc of MY NAME . . . JOSE JIMENEZ was originally a record album released 1/1/60 on the SIGNATURE label (SM 1013). Side One is samples of Bil Dana, Steve Allen and others from Steve's TV show, while the flip is a simulated press conference that includes the talents of Jo Anne Worley, Pat Harrington Jr. and many others.

Born William Szathmary in Quincy, MA. on October 5, 1924, Bill Dana was a writer on the Steve Allen Show who came to national prominence when allowed to do his Jose character on Steve's Xmas '59 special. Public demand brought Mr. Jimenez back so many times that Dana became an Allen regular. This Top 20 LP, Dana's first of many recordings, chronicles in part his first year of television fame.

Soon Bill Dana reached greater heights with Jose NASA humor, developed in 1961 at San Francisco's Hungry i. This led to an LP called THE FIRST MAN IN SPACE - JOSE JIMENEZ THE ASTRONAUT (Kapp Records).
