Synopsis

Product Description
Come O Spirit brings together artists like Dave Bazan, Damien Jurado, Rosie Thomas, Dennison Witmer, The Welcome Wagon (featuring Sufjan Stevens) and Leigh Nash to revive 400 years of long-forgotten melodies and liturgical music. The brainchild of producers Isaac Wardell and Mason Neely, Come O Spirit interprets hymnody through lush, cinematic arrangements and a drop of Southern gothic mystique. It's like a prayer.

CD Reviews

A refreshing take
MINartist | S.E. Ohio | 11/03/2009
(4 out of 5 stars)

"A refreshing take on a century old melody set to a poem written by Katharina von Schlegel in 1752. This recording fits nicely into a growing body of traditional hymns reinterpreted for a generation with many varied musical influences who've rediscovered how comforting the old songs can be but don't care for the over produced arrangements their parents or grandparents listened to. I for one find new christian music largely forgettable but traditional hymns never fail to lift my spirits.

Musicologists have ignored the fact that hymns were a sort of top 40 music during the 1800's as friends gathered in family parlors to try out the newest hymns spun out in the thousands by poets/composers like Fannie Crosby and William Doane. Only the finest examples of these are preserved in today's Hymnals. they have stood the test of time and deserve revival. Can't wait to buy the rest of the album."
