CD Reviews

Atmospheric music from the North at its best
Guardian of the Zen Sea | Looking after the sun and surf | 10/31/2000
(5 out of 5 stars)

"In the early 1980s, Mychael Danna and Tim Clement combined to create some of the finest and most innovative "atmospheric" music in Canada and North America. I first heard their music when I was living in Quebec, and a friend of mine recommended that I listen to "Summerland". I've not been the same since. That CD took me into a new way of listening to the North and to relating music to environment. Other artists have worked in similar musical directions, but Danna and Clement were the first I heard, and theirs is the music that lead me down the path to collecting music and eventually producing a radio program dedicated to providing a different way of hearing the world. This CD includes many of the best cuts from their early releases, which are now difficult to find. Since their early collaboration each of these musicians has gone on to create additional music which expands from their original directions. Mychael Danna is particularly noted for his film music, and for solo releases and collaborations with his brother produced for the Hearts of Space label (and featured on the syndicated radio program). Tim Clement has since created the incredible "Waterstation", and one of my all-time favorite CDs, "Wolf Song Night", with Deschamps on slide guitar. (Hey, this was BEFORE Steve Roach released "Dust to Dust"). The music on this CD will bring you to new palces in the north, and even if you have not spent time in Canada, you will understand why it has inspired artists and environmentalists from around the world."
