Why are we so drawn to the ocean? Perhaps because our bodies so nearly reflect this soup that is so integral a part of our ancient beginnings--the saline liquid of ourlife's blood, the rhythm of our heart and breath--nearly every cell has a connection to some ocean-borne organism or feature. It provides a bountiful texture for our lives--food for our bodies, rhythm for our souls, the dynamic of tempest and calm reflecting our moods, water that nourishes the land we live on, and a place to find solace from the noise of the transformed territories, most of us call home. Sound is one of the unique ways we can take a hallowed journey from the shore, below the surface and back again, experiencing a feeling of continuous transformation from land to water and visualizing the images without ever opening our eyes. Before I became a naturalist and bio-acoustician, I had no idea that fishes sang or shrimp snapped their tiny claws. I wasn't even sure that they heard anything. Ah, but we know so little. Here's some of what we have found...
