CD Reviews

Splendid

"As in my review of Op.10 in this series, I am going to sing the praises of John Lill's Beethoven. There are some caveats. These are analog recordings, first released in 1977. Sonatas Nos. 16 and 17 offer good, clear, but not very warm sonics, while Sonata No. 18 is in sound that is somewhat crisper, almost as good as digital. The excellent producer John Boyden was at the helm--best known for his digital work for the now defunct label IMP. The annotator considers No. 16 the weakest of these pieces, but one never would know it from Lill's interpretation. The long slow movement receives tender loving care without any sentimentality. One of the refreshing aspects of this CD is how on the money Lill's concepts of the tempo markings are. I don't think I've ever heard the finale of No.18 taken at a real Presto con Fuoco before. As for The Tempest, this is a glowing performance that seems to echo Beethoven's remarks about reading the Shakespeare play to find out what the music is about. There are much more famous pianists than John Lill, but I've never heard better Beethoven."
