CD Reviews

Beautiful, contemplative music
NotATameLion | Michigan | 11/08/2002
(5 out of 5 stars)

"If I had to pick the top ten CDs in my entire music collection, Beautiful Starry Night would have to be among them. This is truly a disc of excellence. It is not only beautiful (as the title says) but contemplative as well.Jean-Yves Thibaudet was born to play this music. He has just the right touch of restraint to hold this complex and often meandering music together. At the same time, he allows himself to become absorbed and a part of it.From the very first track, this disc amazes. Ravel has done a truly remarkable thing in writing Gaspard de la nuit -- he has captured the sound of the stars. Likewise, his Miroirs are the perfect audible representation of introspection and contemplation.I know of no other piano album that can match this one for sheer beauty. I give Jean-Yves Thibaudet's Beautiful Starry Night my highest recommendation."
Beautiful, complex, intelligent
Richard Almasi | Europa | 11/27/2008
(5 out of 5 stars)

"This recording has beauty, complexity and intelligence.

The warmth of the original pieces by Ravel are there, but Thibaudet adds complexity to the music, and what is born is a recording of beauty and intelligence.

Like the previous reviewer, this is one of my top-ten essential recordings in my entire music collection, it has been so for over 10 years now.

I have very a eclectic music taste and enjoy all sorts of good music, everything from: metal, rock, jazz, world music, opera, ambient, synth, noise/experimental, and classical.

I believe that great music does not belong to any constrained musical genre and audience, this recording belongs to that category of music.

Anyone who appreciates good music should not have missed out on this recording.
