CD Reviews

A beautiful lute recording by Nigel North
M. Levitt - classical music buff | Philadelphia, PA | 07/08/2006
(5 out of 5 stars)

"When I first spotted this recording on Amazon.com's website, the total lack os customer reviews led me to suspect this CD wasn't worthwhile.

Was I wrong!

This is a beautiful recording of lute music by Nigel North.

I think the qualities that strike me most about this CD are - in no special order - that so much of the music is unfamiliar to me; that the music is so uniformly good; that Nigel North's playing is flawless; and that the sound quality is top drawer.

Nigel North almost makes the Bach Chaconne sound effortless. It also is very beautifully performed, so good, in fact, that I'd be hard pressed to name another recorded performance that can top it.

The Weiss pieces are beautiful, highly expressive. Every bit as good as any of the Bach Lute Suites, which is saying a lot. In fact, so good I want to explore everything that Weiss wrote; and wonder what I've missed in the Robert Barto recordings of Sylvius Leopold Weiss on Naxos!

The Vivaldi, a Concerto is F Major, is actually a Bach Concerto After Vivaldi, BWV 972. It is a wonderful piece, harmonically rich, very moving and expressive, that takes about 9 minutes to perform, and is pure Bach, which is to say it is a gem.

The Gramophone reportedlly rates this Nigel North disc a top CD, and they are absolutely right on the money.

The sound is rich, full, and very flattering both to Nigel North and the instrument he plays so well.

Highly recommended!!"
