Fusion with a difference

(4 out of 5 stars)

"An affinity between the spirituality of Coltrane's jazz and the great compositions of JS Bach is deftly portrayed in this recording by an eclectic combination of jazz and classical musicians. Its real strength lies in its near-seamless presentation of a diversity of musical influences and styles. It moves effortlessly between near-straight classical interpretations of Bach, jazz improvisations, classically-influenced renditions of jazz themes, and some original compositions.

The performances are accomplished and draw the listener into new musical territory. The fusion that brings some familiar compositions into unfamiliar settings works surprisingly well, whether in the form of Raphaël Imbert's improvisations on saxophone, the string backing of the Manfred Quartet or André Rossi's accompaniments on the organ in the church of Saint André, Bouc Bel Air. Rossi's Choral de Mi is both majestic and moving - a masterpiece.

A very worthwhile recording for anyone with an interest in something just a little bit different.
