Synopsis

Yes, it's kind of a stretch--a tad unpatriotic, even--to postulate that a gaggle of British art-rockers can do justice to the Sultan of Swat. Moniker aside, however, their jazz-tinged progressive-rock approach fits nicely alongside peers such as Brian Auger's Oblivion Express, and even some of Zappa's early-'70s work. The band sets up solid though unremarkable backing on extended jams like "Tomorrow (Joining the Day)" and "We People Darker Than Blue." But lead singer Jenny Hazan was Babe Ruth's most distinctive weapon, a firebrand who had more in common with the era's hard-drinking blues busters than the delicate-flower school of female singers. --David Sprague

CD Reviews

2 songs great, 3 songs good, 2 songs indifferent

(3 out of 5 stars)

"For those who haven't ever hear this band (only knew that Babe Ruth was a baseball player), it's a great alternative/progressive rock band showed up in the 70's.
Their music is characterized by charming and unique style electric guitar and bass tunes accompanying the great vocals. The "Mexican" is a must hear song... that's the first one I listened and starting searching for more. Together with the "black dog" (my favorite, a powerful rock piece) are the greatest songs of this CD."Those People Darker Than Blue", "Tomorrow" and "Lady" are good songs...
The two rest songs ("Turquoise" and "Jack O' Lantern") have not much things to say, I didn't like them.I would surely suggest you to first buy the "Fist Base" CD, which includes "Black Dog" and the "Mexican" together with some other very good prog. rock songs: "King Kong", "Runaways", "Joker" and also "Wells Fargo"."
Not enough tracks to make a valid compilation

"Since this group released 5 albums, and CDs have a nearly 80 minute capacity, it's dumb to put together a compilation of an obscure group like this and only have 7 meager songs. Where is Dancer? Where is Sad But Rich? Where is Fascination and Elusive? This only gives a small taste of the band."
The Mexican is THE BOMB!!!!!!!!!

"The mexican is one of the greatest records I have ever heard.Alot of the other stuff is a bit 'Prog' but it is worth getting for that one track."
