Synopsis

Spanish duo Azucar Moreno's last few albums have showcased a near-perfect balance of the group's traditional gypsy-flamenco sensibilities and radio-friendly rhythms. 1996's Esclava de Tu Piel incorporated a slick club sensibility into the mix, and 1998's Ole found sisters Toni and Encarna Salazar experimenting more within various genres. Azucar Moreno's 10th disc, Amen, finds the pair wholly comfortable within the dance-pop realm, and they approach it with their usual dramatic gusto. Upbeat tracks such as "Mamma Mia," "Dale Que Dale," and the galloping title cut shimmer with life and love energy, while "San Jose" and "Viva la Vida" are irresistible calls to the dance floor. The mood is more contemplative on "El Amor Se Echa de Menos" and on "Amigo Mio," an affecting ode of support encouraging a gay friend to not be ashamed of his sexuality. --Joey Guerra

CD Reviews

AWSOME MUSIC!

(5 out of 5 stars)

"Azucar Moreno once more delivers and incredible CD filled with beautifully arranged rumba. "Amen" is a bit different from the previous releases in that it has more Spanish rumba and even the slow songs have great guitar arrangements. The lyrics are very uplifting and sensual, which makes each song a sensory treat. I truly hope they continue to produce more music because they are showing that with each release, they just keep getting better."
Mediocre overall.

"The opening title track is a great dance tune , but the rest of this disc just does not cut it. It seems rather uninspired. As music to simply dance to , I would say this is adecuate. Yet overall as a recording this falls short. These girls have some great artistic ability- There are some rather "sensous" moments, and they throw in a good share of slower tunes for a good mix, but they can't seem to get out of the rut of mediocrity. The tune "tutur" is an example of the potential they posses. I'd say if you like Thalia w/ touch of disco this may be up your alley , but if your standards are high, be careful with this one."
